Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to: interpretating literary texts (reading, understanding and explaining) - make deductions about depiction of melancholia in particular periods of european culture - answer questions - discuss about texts

  • introdoctury seminar - melancholy, literature and aesthetics - Ancient Greece and Rome (aesthetics of the four elements, theory of four humors) - renaissance (engraving Melencolia I. by Dürer) - Hamlet: melancholy Dane - The Anatomy of Melancholy by R. Burton - cult of melancholy - romanticism - 19th century (e.g. Lenau, Leopardi, Baudelaire, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche) - psychoanalysis (S. Freud - Mourning and Melancholia) - melancholy, depression, boredom - expressionism (e.g. Georg Trakl) - modernists (e.g. Proust, Pessoa, Hesse...) - melancholy in nordic literature
