Course objectives
The alphabetical Greek dialects are mainly treated in this lecture. The lecture also serves as an introduction into the historical grammar and language history of Greek. The lecture is intended for students of Greek and Latin philology.
At the end of this course the students should be able to describe the peculiarities of the Greek dialects in phonology, morphology and syntax; identify the Greek dialects; to understand the main causes giving birth to various dialects; to demonstrate the use of dialects in literature.
Syllabus
  • After a short introduction into Mycenaean Greek the alphabetical Greek dialects are mainly treated in this lecture. Basic division of the themes treated in the lectures: 1. the dialectal subdivision of Greek and the peculiarities of the Greek dialects in phonology, morphology and syntax; 2. the attestation of Greek dialects in inscriptions; 3. the specific use of the different dialects in literature (for example the Ionic scientific prose, the Aeolian lyric poetry, the Doric language of the chorus passages of tragedy).

Teaching methods
Planned learning activities and teaching methods consist of lectures, reading and analysis of non-attic texts.
Assessment methods
Oral exam, student demonstrates his/her knowledge of the Greek dialects via the analysis of selected literary and non-literary texts.
