Course objectives
This course surveys Macedonian literature in the first half of the 20th century (up to the codification of literary Macedonian language in 1945 and the formation of Macedonian Republic within SFRY). In the first lessons, we look at literature echoing the Illinden Uprising and the Balkan Wars. After that, we examine Macedonian literature between the wars, mostly the dramatic works of three most prominent playwrights: Vasil Iljoski, Risto Krle a Anton Panov, who elaborated on the social problems in their plays. We will watch some of the plays on the video as part of the course, analyzing and discussing them afterwards. The course also covers the works of another important author: Kosta Solev Racin (author of expressionist and social lyrical poetry), who is considered to be the founder of modern Macedonian poetry. The last topic is the poetry of World War II, Makedonskiot literaturen kružok vo Sofija (Kole Nedelkovski, Mite Bogoevski, Venko Markovski). On successful completion of the course student will acquire knowledge of the interwar Macedonian literature and he will deepen his skill to analyse and interpret a literary text.
