Course objectives
The course is an introduction into the subject of Latin literature of the Bohemian Middle Ages from its beginnings to the end of the period (i.e. from the 10th century to the time of John Hus, or the Hussite movement). The course is divided into two parts. At the end of this first part, students will be able to describe the history of medieval Latin literature in Bohemia up until the 13th century.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
describe the history of medieval Latin literature in Bohemia up until the 13th century;
explain the influences of the classical tradition on medieval literature;
describe connections of medieval Latin literature of Bohemian origin in this period with the development of Latin literature in Europe, as well as with the contemporary Old Czech literature;
evaluate the most significant representatives of particular genres of Latin literature in Bohemia in this period;
analyze the language and the style of selected treatises.

  • 1. Medieval Latin literature in Bohemia (definition, content, development of research).
  • 2. Characteristics of Medieval Latin literature.
  • 3. Development of Bohemian Latin literature until the end of the 13th century: Hagiography (Wenceslas and other legends).
  • 4. Historiography (Cosmas).
  • 5. Religious lyric poetry (hymns, sequences, tropes, cantilenas).
  • 6. "Drama".
  • 7. Sermons.
  • 8. Diplomatics and rhetoric (charters, epistolography, formularies, dictamina).

Lecture on the selected topics; discussion over selected works of the authors analyzed in the classes; reading of selected texts.
Assessment methods
Regular attendance and active class participation (min. 75%); final oral exam testing students' orientation in the literature discussed in the seminars; discussion over the work of a selected author.
