Prerequisites
SOUHLAS
1. Do you want to understand deeper the ancient philosophy? And simultaneously to gain easier the credit in History of Philosophy I? Then enrol in this seminary! But it presupposes that you would be willing to read carefully the given ancient philosophical texts and to discuss them.

2. The course is open above all for:
a) students of the first class,
b) students of the second class which want to share their experiences and thus help the younger students.

3. Also the students of the third class are welcome.

4. As well as the graduate students which like ancient and medieval philosophy.

Course objectives
Systematic and deeper studium of sources for the course History of Philosophy I, discussion on problems and methods of the sources.
Learning outcomes
After the completion of the course, student should be able to:
- understand and explain main problems from the ancient philosophy;
- interpret studied philosophical sources from these epochs.

  • Discussions on source texts to following topics according to progress of lectures in the course History of Philosophy I:
  • 1. The origin of philosophy and its relationship to the myth.
  • 2. The Milesians.
  • 3. Pythagoras.
  • 4. Heraclitus.
  • 5. The Eleatics.
  • 6. Posteleatics systems.
  • 7. The Sophists and an anthropological inverse in philosophy.
  • 8. Socrates.
  • 9. Plato
  • a) psychology,
  • b) theory of Forms.
  • 10. Aristotle
  • a) system of knowledge,
  • b) ontology.

Teaching methods
Reading of relevant texts; on-line tests; discussions.
Assessment methods
1. Active participation in seminars.
In the case of only passive participation on a lesson you will obtain 1 p., when you will join to the discussion on the ground of your reading of the obligatory source you will obtain 2 p. You should collect at least 75 % of possible points in order to gain credits.

2. Before every lesson you have to fulfill an autotest in the ELF (https://elf.phil.muni.cz/elf3/). You have to gain at least 50 % of possible points from all the tests.
