Students are eligible to sit the final master state examination if they have obtained all the compulsory and facultative subjects credits, they have obtained the credits from the subjects which are compulsory for all students of the Faculty of Arts at Masaryk University and they have submitted their diploma thesis.

Course objectives
The final master’s state examination consists of an examination in Modern Greek language and literature and a defence of a master’s thesis . At the master’s thesis defence, students present their thesis and its aims and outputs, respond to comments from their supervisor and the opponent, and answer questions and remarks from the committee.
The final master’s state examination consists of a written and an oral part; both must be taken during the same exam period. Students sit the written part first; students who do not successfully pass the written test cannot sit the oral part of the examination. The exam content is based on both the fundamental theoretical profile core courses (Z) and the profile core courses (P).
Learning outcomes
After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:
explain the main tendencies of the development of Greek literature from the Middle Ages to the present and to place them explain the development of the Modern Greek language from Hellenistic Koine to the present
understand cultural and linguistic events in Greece from the Middle Ages to the present day within their historical context speak fluently and write correctly in Modern Greek (level C1 of the European Reference Framework)
translate any text adequately from Czech to Modern Greek and vice versa, including the ability to use specialized dictionaries for translating more demanding texts
characterize the oeuvre of most significant Byzantine and Modern Greek authors
read and interpret Byzantine and Modern Greek literature, including texts in the Katharevousa
write a scholarly informed text based on the newest scholarly outcomes and documents the abiliy of the aboslvent to pursue an independent research.
Syllabus
  • In the written exam, students demonstrate their command of Modern Greek at the C1 level (primarily from the courses Practical Language – Advanced and Writing in Modern Greek, but language skills are improved in all of the courses taught in Greek). The exam consists of a short translation from Greek to Czech and from Czec to Greek and an essay on a given topic.
  • The oral part examines the students’ knowledge in the following fields:
  • – Spoken Greek (from Practical Language and other courses),
  • – Byzantine and early Modern Greek literature and theoretical approaches to literature (from Introduction to Byzantine Literature, Greek Literature of the 15th –18th Centuries, and text interpretation seminars),
  • – Byzantine and Modern Greek literature, both in the original and in translation (the reading list is required),
  • – The development of Greek from Hellenistic Koine up to the present and the ability to read and understand the texts included (from History of the Modern Greek Language I and II, Classical Greek for M. A.), and
  • – General knowledge of history of Greece of the 15th–18th centuries (from History of Greece of the 15th – 18th centuries).

  • For the literature, see the annotations of the compulsory subjects, from which the students have to obtain the credits to sit the final master state examination
Teaching methods
Students can only take the oral part of the examination after they have successfully passed the written test.
