Course objectives
The aim of the course is to give an overview of Italian history from the pre-Romanesque period to the present. To draw students' attention to the characteristic features of Italian history, patterns of Italian state-hood (ancient Rome, European powers), to the problems of Italian historiography and to cultural development (painting, sculpture, architecture).
Learning outcomes
The student will understand the basic developmental tendencies of Italian history from the pre-Romanesque period to the present. The student realizes the characteristics of Italian history, patterns of Italian statehood (ancient Rome, European powers), the problems of Italian historiography. The student will be able to confront historical development with cultural development (painting, sculpture, architecture.

  • 1. Research methods in Italian historiography 2. Ancient Rome and its heritage 3. Migration Period, Ostrogoths, Byzantium, Langobards, Charles the Great, arrival of the Normans 4. Medieval communes, popes against emperors, Hohenstaufen politics in Italy 5. 14th century, Avignon papacy. Change of political orientation of Italy. 6. Medieval art 7. Quattrocento, a century of powers: Naples, Papal States, Florence, Milan, Venice 8. Italian Renaissance 9. Mannerism and Italian Wars 10. Role of the Papal States, Counter-Reformation and censorship of public life 11. Baroque and the "Long 17th century" (end of 16th till the beginning of 18th) 12. 18th century - European powers and new order in Italy 13. Age of Enlightenment (Dall'Arcadia all'illuminismo)
