Course objectives
The aim of this course is to acquaint the students with several works of English literature canon, and afterwards to develop their skills in discussing and analyzing literature in a more academic way. The objective here is to make students realize that there are various possible ways of reading and understanding a literary text, and to be able to talk and write about it professionally and effectively in English.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to use various literary texts in order to improve their language skills, and to analyse literary texts according to various methods both in a written form and in discussions, as wel as to compare and contrast main themes and characters. The students will also learn how to present their ideas/opinions, and how to write comparisons and analyses in a more academic way in English.
Syllabus
  • The students will analyze different literary genres and time periods from British literature. Namely, they will analyze these cannonical pieces: 1. Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare 2. The Eve of St. Agnes by John Keats 3. Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen 4. North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell 5. The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde 6. Appointment with Death by Agatha Christie Apart from a literary analysis of poetry, prose and drama, the students should leave the course with a broader knowledge of English social satire and other societal issues, Gothic literature, Romanticism or gender issues.

Reading, group discussions, written assignments and feedback
Assessment methods
The students will, of course, be asked to read the literary texts. The assessment consists of several semester tasks: 1) discussion questions in the ELF; 2) a short summary of a text; 3) a short comparative paper; 4) a short video task. And the exam consists of a presentation on one of the themes found in the texts, and a short written reaction to one of the presentations.
