Course objectives
The course is supposed to familiarize the students with the issues of utilization of aerial reconnaissance in archaeology, with its position within the system of prospecting methods, and its practical application for the documentation of immovable archaeological monuments. Apart from treatment of the history of aerial prospecting in Europe and its development in our country the instruction will also be aimed at understanding of aerial photographing methods, comprehension of the significance of technical equipment and aids used both in the process of data collection and with their processing. Besides a systematic instruction on the partial steps of the work on board of the plane during aerial reconnaissance and photographing (monitoring, navigation, visual survey, photographing, form records, cooperation with the pilot) the students will also be familiarized with the evaluation of aerial photographs and the follow-up processing of the acquired information. Alternatively (depending on an agreement with ÚAM FF MU) it is possible to finalize the course with a practical 1- to 2day training in the form of reconnaissance flights with photographing and a follow-up evaluation of the data acquired by the students during the training. The goal of the course is to grasp the significance of a non-destructive archaeological research, namely aerial archaeology, from various aspects, mainly specialist and ethical; the ability to prepare a thoughtful aerial archaeological project supported by arguments; recognizing of the advantages and limitations of landscape types from the viewpoint of creation of basic marks that may enable an identification of archaeological monuments; acquiring of basic methods of collection, processing and storage of aerial archaeological data.
Syllabus
  • 1-2. Introduction. The history of aerial reconnaissance in Europe and the CR. Position of aerial survey within prospecting methods in archaeology and its integration into the system of documentation of immovable archaeological monuments. 3. Application of non-destructive methods in areal surveying of landscape wholes. 4.-5. Types of aerial photographing – vertical and oblique; the photographic technique and material used (photogrammetry); navigation means; aerial technology (radio-controlled models, types of airplanes used). 6.- 7. Various forms of marks and their classification. Principles of analysis and interpretation of black-and-white and colour aerial photographs. 8. Hitherto outcomes of aerial reconnaissance in the CR. 9.-11. Utilization of the remote Earth prospecting data (orthophotography, satellite photos, LIDAR). 12.-13. Pre-flight preparation – delimitation of the area, topographical preparation, organization of work on board of the plane, technique of photographing. 14. Practical instruction – prospecting flight with photographing. 15. Evaluation of the data acquired during the practical part of the course.
