Course objectives
At the end of the course the students have a good knowledge about nynorsk history a contemporaly position and importance, they can understand, analyze and formulate nynorsk. Students will have a complete view and mastery of nynorsk as one of the written forms of modern Norwegian and know how to identify modern Norwegian dialects and be familiar with their characteristics.
Syllabus
  • Elements and aims of the course:
  • Give a brief outline of the origins of nynorsk.
  • Give a solid outline of the situation of nynorsk today: regions, written/spoken and legislation.
  • Give a solid course of nynorsk grammar: morphology and syntax, and point out the differences to “bokmål”.
  • Point out writers’ use of nynorsk.
  • Give a solid outline of the various dialects in Norway based on isoglosses.
  • Listen to various dialects and identify them from known criterias.

Teaching methods
The seminar is based on methods of presentation, analysis and synthesis of knowledge. It also uses collective work, in-class discussions and individual work of students.
