Course objectives
The course offers a basic overview of various systems of schooling in selected countries in a structured form. Cultural, regional, socioeconomic and political differences are among the selection criteria. The selection reflects participants’ interests and thus can differ in different semesters. Students are provided with an informational basis about typologically different systems of schooling. They understand the typologies and they can search relevant information about a selected system of schooling.
Syllabus
  • 1. Course topics, sources, system of seminar theses. Structure of presentations and selection criteria for information about various systems of schooling. Educational systems characteristics – the Netherlands: a case study. 2. Countries in transformation: general characteristics of systems of schooling in post-socialist countries – new EU member states. 3. Examples of systems of schooling in Germany, Austria, and possibly a part of Switzerland. 4. German-speaking area: general characteristics of systems of schooling in German-speaking countries and summary of individual examples 5. Examples of systems of schooling in Sweden, Finland, and Denmark. 6. Scandinavian area: general characteristics of systems of schooling in Scandinavian countries 7. Examples of systems of schooling in Great Britain, USA, Canada, and Australia. 8. Anglo-American area: general characteristics of systems of schooling in Anglo-American countries 9. Examples of systems of schooling in France, Spain, and Portugal. 10. Francophone area: general characteristics of systems of schooling in French-speaking countries and summary of individual examples 11. Systems of schooling in lesser developed countries (China?) and other non-European countries (Japan?) 12. General characteristics and summary of individual examples from non-European countries
