Course objectives
Based on previously acquired knowledge of elementary Latin grammar, this proficiency-oriented course is geared primarily toward reading comprehension of self-contained Latin texts.
Syllabus
  • An introduction to individual working with an original text: reading and analyzing of selected Latin sources pertaining to the history of religion, cult and everyday life. Samples of classical, medieval and Neo-Latin are presented to the students. Reading practice includes grammatical as well as cultural and historical commentary on the texts.

Assessment methods
Contents of the semester:
class exercises, class discussion, student paper, final written exam.
Requirements for the completion:
Active class attendance (75%) and conscientious preparation of translation assignments as well as preparation of a minor topic for class discussions are the essential requirements for grade. Course grade is determined by performance in a final written exam where students’ mastery of basic grammar and vocabulary is tested through a translation of a short self-contained Latin passage (dictionary allowed).
