Course objectives
Lectures are oriented to the visual art in Europe and North America in the modern times. The main objectives of the course are the following: acquainting students with the basic terms and categories of history of art, as well as with methodology of work of the art historian. An essay has to be written, interpreting a selected oeuvre or set of works.

  • Chronological history of art in modern times, selected problems of interpretation of art, e.g. Picture and Word (emblematics, iconology...), Birth and death of author, Visual representation.

Assessment methods
Oral exam in the end. Only those who get at least 3 point will be permitted to the oral exam. 1) Seminar essay (0-3 points), at least 4500 characters, submit through Homework Vault by 6 May 2009. Selected essays will be presented during lectures (0-0,5 pts). The topic must be submited in Homework Vault by 31 March 2009. 2) Test of knowledge (0-2 pts) Questions will be specified during the semester, two weeks ahead at latest.
