Course objectives
The course gives an overview of use of art historical methodology today. After World War II the various methodological approaches to the art history emerged. In the lectures, therefore, we will attempt to explain these issues and methods both as a part of the historical conditions of the academy and the history of visual arts.
Syllabus
  • 1. The Art history, the „art“, the work of art. & 2. The Art historian and the art history. & 3. The Art history after 1945: a) The international conferences. b) The new approaches: iconology, structuralism, existentionalism c) The new empirism: the exhibitions, the catalogues. d) New issues in the 1960s and 1970s. & 4. The Great historians of art in the 1. Half of the 20th ventury: a) Otto Pächt, Kurt Badt, André Chastel, Pierre Francastel, Ernst H. Gombrich, Jan Bialostocki. & 5. The basic categories I.: a) the style; b) the structure. & 6. The basic categories II.: a) the theme, the symbol; b) the function. & 7. The Art history and History (George Kugler, Hayden White, Dominick LaCapra). & 9. The arthistorical approaches I.: a) the connoisseurschip; b) the formalism. & 10. The arthistorical approaches II. c) the iconography-iconology; d) the perception and aesthetics.& 11. The arthistorical approaches III.: e) the history of culture; f) the semiotics. & 12. The approaches of other disciplines: a) the social history of art and the cultural history of art; b) the sociology; c) the psychology and the psychoanalysis. & 13. The applied disciplines on art: a) the arthistorical museology; b) historic preservation; c) the exhibitions, mediation of art and contemporary debates on arts. & 14. Towards a critical History of art. & 15. The topics in the Art history: a) the explaining in the Art history; b) the "New ciceronism ?". &
