Course objectives
Classicisme and Romanticisme in the 19th century (Foscolo, Leopardi, Manzoni).
Syllabus
  • The core of the course consists in the analysis and discussion of texts by the main 19th century Italian writers. From Neoclassicism to Preromanticism and Romanticism: Ugo Foscolo, Alessandro Manzoni, Giacomo Leopardi. The literature of the Italian Risorgimento (literature in dialects, patriotic and political themes, historiography, mémoirs, historical novel). The late Risorgimento: Ippolito Nievo, Giuseppe Giusti, Niccolo Tommaseo. The literature after the unification of Italy: Francesco de Sanctis, Scapigliatura milanese, Verism. Poetry in the second half of the 19th century: Giosuè Carducci, Giovanni Pascoli.

Teaching methods
Lecture: description of the literary field, explanation and definition of basic notions and their demonstration on concrete texts by concrete authors. Seminar: Application of the acquired theoretical knowledge on authentic texts. In the form of a presentation the students show their capability to connect their theoretical knowledge while working with a concrete text.
Assessment methods
Oral examination - an interview on a theme resulting from the discussed thematic ranges including a practical analysis of a text.
