Course objectives
The main objective is to analyse portuguese-written essay focusing on the vocabulary, phraseology, idioms, as well as the main ideas.
Syllabus
  • Analysis of the following texts: a) Eduardo Lourenço: Fernando, Rei da Nossa Baviera, A nau de Icaro ou o fim da emigraçao, Somos um povo de pobres com mentalidade de ricos, Portugal Identidade e Imagem, Portugal: entre a realidade e o sonho b) Eugénio de Andrade: Encontro com Fernando Pessoa, Rilke e Mariana Alcoforado c) António Manuel Batista: Um Discurso Sobre as Ciencias que é um discurso contra a Ciencia d) Agostinho da Silva: Carta Vária

Teaching methods
Based on students´ homework consisting in reading selected literary or publicistic texts, the passages that are difficult or interesting from the point of view of its language or ideas are analysed in detail in the seminar. This is followed by interpretation of the text and discussion of its topic. The work with the text is finished by writing an essay on the particular topic or translating a selected part of the text into Czech.
Assessment methods
Credit: a) attendance and active participation in the course (min. 50 %) based on the given homework b) writing 5 short essays on particular topics, translating selected passages of the texts into Czech
