Course objectives
Under the term ekfrasis (lat. descriptio) there is the literary or rhetorical unit in a broader sense understood, through which you can very clearly describe or portray the matter or fact. In a narrower sense, it is possible to mark an ekfrasis description of such literary works of art, which is trying through literary means to visualize the work and to make the reader to " viewer" , whom it suggests the visual image of the work. We meet the classical prototypes of these descriptions in the description of the Achileus schield from the Illias and of Aeneas shield from Virgils Aeneis. The width of the various options of the ekfrasis use in literary works, diverse intentions of the authors and literary tradition, however, go far beyond the framework, which classical rhetoric has set. The seminar will seek to provide the students with a wide range of different approaches to a substance that will make them an idea of ekfrasis from ancient times through modern times. It will also be monitored continuous confrontation with antique patterns, which is constantly visible in both medieval and modern works, although the authors often try to distance themselves from these greats.
