Course objectives
The subject structure of “a history of European integration”, principle trends and problems, historiography. Sources, archives and documents. The development of institutional structures in European integration. The phenomenon of a supranational confederation and “divided sovereignty” as a historical issue.
Syllabus
  • Specifcic historical disciplines and methods applied to the study of the history of European integration. Dcuments which provide a guide to the development of the programme of European integration and the integration process. Sources, editions, historiography. Central ideas and issues. Structures, functions and historical types of federal union. Federalism and autonomy in the domestic mechanisms of 20th century European states. The issue of “supranation”. The movement from international organisations’ structures to genuine integration. Forms and mechanisms for the relations between European states, transcending the normal character of international relations. Supranationalist regionalism, attempts at local integration, small European integration
