Course objectives
The concepts introduced in this course should help to answer the question "why poeple sometimes cannot force themselves to do things which they need to do, are able to do, and even want to do", as well as to outline potential improvement strategies. The students will have the opportunity to apply the concepts to their own behaviour.

  • Practical implications of various motivational theories: Procrastination. Expectancy x value theories. Temporal motivation theory. Intrinsic/extrinsic motivation. Achievement motivation. Self-efficacy. Self regulation. Psychological reactance. Self-determination. Ego-defensive strategies. Self-handicapping. Irrational beliefs. Avoidant behaviour. Attributions. Time orientations. Structured and non-structured tasks.

Teaching methods
Lectures, class discussion, practical application aiming at self-knowledge and self-improvement.
Assessment methods
A self-observation-based portfolio supplemented with theoretical interpretations will be discussed in a colloquim at the end of the semester. Student will also write a short theoretical test.
