Course objectives
Annotation
The course offers an introduction to classical and modern Islam as the youngest of the monotheistic religions coming from the Near East. The course outlines historical periods of Islam, its belief, law, ethics and theological concepts as well as its rituals and cultural contexts. A due attention is paid to the continuity between classical Islam and Islamic reformism in modern times as well as to a comparison with Judaism and Christianity.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- demonstrate the basic factual knowledge of the history of Islam, including main features of its teachings, religious law and ritual practices;
- identify the principal historical transformations in the development of Islam;
- use the basic terminology of Islam and its academic study;
- interprete the selected Islamic source material (e.g. Qur'an, hadiths etc.);
- compare Islam with other monotheistic systems (Judaism, Christianity).
Syllabus
  • (0) Introduction to the course. (1) Religious life in the Pre-Islamic Arabia. (2) Muhammad as a prophet, social reformer, politician and military leader. (3) The Qur'an - contents, structure and redaction. (4) The spread of Islam. (5) The formation and sources of the Islamic law. (6) The Islamic „schism“ and the differentiation of Islam. (7) Test in classical Islam. (8) Fundaments of the Islamic belief, religious philosophy and mysticism. (9) „Dark centuries“ of the Islamic history. (10) The Islamic reformism in the 19th and 20th centuries. Secularization and fundamentalism. (11) Relations of Islam to the West. Islam in the Czech lands. (12) Test in modern Islam.

Assessment methods
Requirements for the colloquium / prerequisite for the oral exam:
Requirements for colloquium are identical with the prerequisite for the oral exam:
(a) written test in classical Islam;
(b) written test in modern Islam.
Requirements for the oral exam:
(a) to prove the basic factual knowledge of Islam according to the given list of themes;
(b) to prove the interpretative ability in a given field.
