Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce the basics of phonetics and to teach students how to apply the knowledge in the contemporary Ukrainian. Student must be able to use phonetic analysis (transcription) of standard Ukrainian text and classification of Ukrainian sounds.
Syllabus
  • 1. Phonetics and phonology, subject matter. Instead of phonetics between linguistic disciplines. Phonetics as a science. Study. General characteristics of speech sounds. 2. Speech apparatus and its functions, articulation organs. Speech process. 3. Classification of vowels and consonants 4. Standards of pronunciation of the Ukrainian language. Basic rules of pronunciation in the Ukrainian vocal system 5. Basic pronunciation standards in the Ukrainian consonantist system 6. Simplification in consonant groups. 7. Assimilation, accommodation and dissimulation of consonants in speech flow. 8. Extension of consonants 9. Types of transcription. Transliteration. 10. Phonology, the term phonem and its variants. Replacement (substitution) of phonemes (vocals, consonants). 11. Intonation of phrases. Punctuation and intonation. Types of accent. 12. Ukrainian language euphony. 13. Properties of pronunciation of foreign words. 14. Phonetic segmentation of speech flow. Weakness and division into syllables. Split words at the end of the line (general and technical). 15. Interference in Ukrainian / linguistic and sociolinguistic aspects /

Teaching methods
The course has a form of a class discussion.
Assessment methods
Completion of the course: credit (written and oral part). Exam requirements: active participation (max. Three absences), homeworks. Practical knowledge is also part of the oral part: 10 languages / rhymes 2 poems
