Course objectives
Main activities in the seminar are focused on analysis of language and style of selected Czech texts dating to 13-15th ct. or on analysis of Old Czech graphics. The seminar work will focus either on a topic relating to the development of society in the particular period in the Czech lands or an analysis of all aspects of language of a selected text leading to the conclusion describing the effect the text might have had, i.e. on evaluation of stylistic intentions of the author and the results. Phonological and morphological analysis of anonymous texts contributes to the specification of period of their origin. Seminar works dealing with Old Czech graphics pay attention to the extent in which the graphics of the particular text does and does not correspond with the existing characterization of graphics in 12th-15th ct. A complex view and evaluation of language and style is the result of confrontation of partial information about phonological, morphological, syntactic and lexical levels as well as about the literary form. Information about the Czech society from various points of view can contribute to better understanding of the position of Old Czech in the Czech lands.
Learning outcomes
Having participated in the course, students will be able:
to identify and summarize important features of Old Czech;
to write a paper on a topic relating to Old Czech and to medieval society;
to get orientation in relevant scholarly sources;
to evaluate in an erudite way significant medieval Old Czech literary works
Syllabus
  • The seminar is focused on selected topics from the development of Standard Czech. Explanations of the teacher, who will present he form of Czech in the 12th-15th ct. Students’ papers dealing with the Czech language and society during the selected period (Early Old Czech in the 12th-13th ct., 14th century Czech, Czech of the Hussite period – 15th century). Discussion during which students will express their opinions on the presented topics.

Teaching methods
The first part of the term is covered by the teacher’s explanations, the other part by the participants’ own papers, evaluated in a collective discussion. A seminar.
Assessment methods
Seminar; credit. To receive the credits, it is necessary to participate actively in seminars, i.e. to participate in discussions about the topics presented and to prepare a paper. Students will either present their papers in classes or submit them in a written form.
