Course objectives
Seminars will be primarily aimed at analyses and interpretations outstanding works of literary canon of the second half of the 20th century. Texts will be examined on the basis of both synchronic and diachronic approach. An attention will be also paid to general social-historic context, literary-critical reception and issues of literary genres.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course the student will be able:
- to understand literary text;
- to interpret literary works in historical context;
- to work with the secondary literature creatively;
- to work with information to formulate expertise clearly;
- students will be able to think about literature critically.
A part of this course is devoted to works from the list of required reading.
Syllabus
  • This course is based on the interpretations of selected Czech works of poetry, fiction and drama written in the second half of the 20th century. Literary-theoretical knowledge and skills will be deepened and used to better comprehension of the literary-historical background in the 20th century.
  • Dr. Balaštík's seminars focus on reading and interpretation of selected works and their interpretation in a contemporary literary and cultural context (Ivan Blatný, Miroslav Holub, Josef Kainar, Bohumil Hrabal, Ladislav Fuks, Josef Škvorecký, Milan Kundera, Ludvík Vaculík).
  • Credit requirements: active participation in seminar work; an essay as assigned in the first class.
  • Doc. Bubeníček's seminars focus on reading and interpretation of selected works and their interpretation in a contemporary literary and cultural context (J. Kolář, E. Hostovský, J. Škvorecký, B. Hrabal, J. Seifert, V. Holan, F. Hrubín, L. Vaculík, M. Kundera, J. Šotola, V. Páral, O. Pavel, O. Mikulášek, V. Körner, J. Skácel, J. Kratochvil, Josef Topol). In individual seminars we will pay attention to the key artistic tendencies of the second half of the 20th century (existentialism, surrealism, socialist realism, postmodernism, etc.).
  • Credit requirements: Requirements for successful completion of the seminar: active participation in seminar work; a 5 standard page essay as assigned in the first class.
  • Seminars of Dr. Dědinová
  • In the seminars with elements of research-oriented teaching, we will draw mainly on the works of the following authors: Jiří Weil, Josef Škvorecký, Václav Havel, Vladimír Páral, Ladislav Fuks, Michal Ajvaz, Jáchym Topol, Petra Hůlová, Kateřina Tučková, Viktorie Hanišová, Anna Cima and Anna Bolavá. We will focus on literary reflections on the period's significant historical and cultural milestones and distinctive artistic tendencies and trends.
  • Credit requirements: Requirements for successful completion of the seminar: active participation in seminar work; a 5 standard page essay as assigned in the first class.
  • Seminars of Dr. Záhora:
  • In the seminars, we will focus on the interpretation of important literary works of the second half of the 20th century. We will also take into account the socio-political context and contemporary critical reception. We will gradually focus on the work of Josef Kainar, František Halas, Josef Škvorecký, Miroslav Holub, Jan Skácel, Ivan Wernisch, Václav Havel, Alexander Kliment, Bohumil Hrabal, Ladislav Fuks, Milan Kundera, Ivan Martin Jirous and Zdena Salivarová.
