Course objectives
The aim of the course is: to make the students familiar with main traditional as well as modern approaches used in the analysis of the grammatical development of Modern Greek during the Byzantine period; to apply these approaches while analysing from the linguistic point of view the Greek texts of the above mentioned periods.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will be able to describe key aspects of the grammatical development of the Modern Greek language during the Byzantine period with the help of various methods of historical and historical-comparative linguistics. They will be capable of analysing of dealt with Greek texts from the linguistic point of view.
Syllabus
  • 1. Problems of language registers in Byzantine Koine.
  • 2. Main tendencies in the development of vocalic and consonantal system in Byzantine Koine and its consequences for grammatical system.
  • 3. Main tendencies in the development of nominal morphology in Byzantine Koine, standardization of the declension system (singular).
  • 4. Main tendencies in the development of nominal morphology in Byzantine Koine, standardization of the declension system (singular).
  • 5. Restructuring of the pronoun system: personal, demonstrative, and interrogative pronouns.
  • 6. Restructuring of the pronoun system: relative and indefinite pronouns.
  • 7. Main tendencies in the development of verbal morphology in Byzantine Koine: the rise of κ-aorists, future tense, the formation of present stem.
  • 8. Main tendencies in the development of verbal morphology in Byzantine Koine: perfect tense, pluperfect tense.
  • 9. Main tendencies in the development of verbal morphology in Byzantine Koine: infinitives, participles.
  • 10. The ways of enriching the vocabulary in Byzantine Greek.
  • 11. Formation of present-day Greek dialects and their system.
  • 12. Balkan linguistic union: emergence and definition. The position of Greek in Balkan linguistic union.
  • 13. Recapitulation.
  • Lectures are supplemented by reading and analysing Greek literary and non-literary texts.

Teaching methods
Planned learning activities and teaching methods consist of lectures, reading and analysis of Greek texts.
Assessment methods
Credits are awarded for an active participation in the lessons and the oral exam (50 % of correct answers is needed to pass), testing also the student's ability to analyse from the linguistic point of view selected Greek text.
