Course objectives
Description of personal computer - hardware. Operating systems. Basic commands of MS-DOS 6.2, Norton Commander. Working with MS Windows. Word processors - MS Word 97. Spreadsheets - MS Excel 97. Statistical software (examples from general and quantitative genetics). Internet - Telnet (basic Unix commands), World-Wide-Web, FTP, news conferences. Informational and fact-finding services in computer networks: applications in molecular biology and genetics (Current Contents, Medline). Database searching of nucleic acids and proteins (BLAST, Fasta). Sequence alignments. Gene finding. Functional genomics. Genome research (human genome, Drosophila, mouse, Saccharomyces, Arabidopsis). Specialized software for molecular biology. Sequence analysis (DNASIS). Analysis of electropherograms (GelCompar).
