Syllabus
  • (1) An overview of recent applications of PC in Biology (communication, data logging and downloading to a PC, data analyses, experimental design and control, bioinformatics, image analysis, 3D graphics, nanotechnology, molecule structure modelling) – recend trends, software packages, basic principals)
  • (2) Electronic scientific litterature databases, web-based databases. Searching for relevant bibliographic sources (search, queries, sorting out hits, outputs, how to handle vith a review) – practical training on PC aimed to gain a knowledge which is frequently used during seminar-, diploma-, Ph.D. theses, blogs and presentations preparation.
  • (3) Background in data transfer and download to a PC from external devices. Basics of data handling, matematical-statistical processing. How to create professional graph, elementary biostatistical methods.
  • (4) Advanced methods for data processing in MS Excel software. Examples of other statistical software packages.
  • (5) Image nalysis – practical training in image analysis of biological objects.
  • (6) Application of PCs in processing of microscopic images (optical microscopy, SEM, fluorescent techniques, advanced and modern methods in in-vivo microscopy).
  • (7) Graphical databases and their exploitation in ecosystem analyses (electronic maps, satelite images, interactive maps, on-line monitoring systems, live web cameras).
  • (8) Basics of scientific presentation: Practical training in PowePoint. Software options, frequently made mistakes, multimedial presentations, animations, insertion of a video or sound file. Hierarchy diagraphs and/or graphic schemes creation. Some useful tricks how to attract an audiance attention.
  • (9) PC use in specialized fields of Biology: Bioarcheology, analysis of biological samples, palynological databases and software for analysis, bone shape reconstruction, 3D models in scull reconstruction – practical training.
  • (10) PC use in specialized fields of Biology: Systematic botany, Systematic zoology. Comparative mathods using electronic scans, map application in range and biodiversity studies, electronic archives, e-herbariums.
  • (11) PC use in specialized fields of Biology: Experimental Plant Biology, biophysical, biochemical approches to PC-based study of organism at different level of organization and differentiation (membranes, cell structures, … to… ecosystem). Models, expert systems, monitoring systems, studies of biotic and abiotic factors effects on living organisms.
  • (12) PC use in specialized fields of Biology: Molecular biology and genetics. DNA-Sequening, genetic databases, methods in genom studies.
  • (13) E-learning, Computer assisted learning, Interactive databases for education, Professionally-specialized servers, Usenet newsgroups, Self-evaluation methods, PC-based tests. Combined databases – e-dictionaries, encyclopedias, mulimedia.
