Course objectives
During this course, participants will gain knowledge about the outstanding ecological diversity of amphibians and reptiles. The primary aim of the course is to promote research interest of students in this area. Obtained information will be useful not only for basic science but also in applied areas such as conservation or captive husbandry.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction: lecturer’s expertise, information sources, conceptual framework
  • 2. Classification and Diversity: characteristics of major groups, most important families
  • 3. Physiological Ecology: thermal biology, performance, energetics, water relations
  • 4. Reproduction and Life Histories: gametogenesis and fertilization, reproductive modes, sexual and asexual reproduction, sexual dimorphism, parental care, life history variation
  • 5. Behavioral Ecology: Spacing, movement, orientation, communication and social behaviour, foraging ecology and diets, defense and escape
  • 6. Population and community ecology: characteristics of populations, population structure and growth, communities, geography of populations
  • 7. Applied Ecology: conservation biology, herpetoculture
  • 8. Methods in Ecology: capture and manipulation, marking techniques, data collection, experimental designs
