Course objectives
The main goal of the course Introduction to Computer Networks is to provide students with information about technology and services that are used in modern computer networks. The students obtain information about the Internet (including its services).
Syllabus
  • Computer networks. Basic concepts, different sorts.
  • Network topologies and their properties (bus, ring, star).
  • Transfer media (thin and thick coax-cable, twisted-pair, fibre optic).
  • Network architectures (Token-Ring, Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, ...) and principles of their operation.
  • The Internet - history, basic concepts and principles.
  • The TCP/IP protocol. IP address. Types of TCP/IP networks.
  • Basic commands od UNIX operating system.
  • Telnet and Ssh service.
  • Library services.
  • FTP service.
  • Electronic mail. Sending of non-text messages.
  • Usenet News, electronic conferences.
  • World Wide Web service, information system of MU.
  • Searching of the information in the Internet.(Altavista, Infoseek, ...).
  • Introduction to the HTML language - homepage creation.
