Course objectives
This lecture is conceived as an introduction into molecular biology and is based on the chapters selected from the textbook "Introduction into Molecular Biology" (1999-2000, four parts). It gives the explanation of processes on molecular level in relation to the basic functions of living systems (procaryotic as well as eucaryotic organisms and viruses). On the whole, the general molecular processes occuring in living systems are emphasized in this lecture with respect to the specificities characteristic of the main groups of living systems (bacteria, archea, plants, animals and viruses)
Syllabus
  • Proteins (primary, secondary and higher structures of proteins and their biological functions). Nucleic acids (primary, secondary and tertiary structure of DNA and RNA, different conformations of DNA and their significance in biological systems). Interactions of proteins with DNA. Genetic information and the genetic code. Molecular structure of procaryotic and eucaryotic genome. Replication of procaryotic and eucaryotic genome. Transcription of procaryotic and eucaryotic genome. Postranscriptional modification and processing of RNA, especially in eucaryotes. Mechanisms of splicing and selfsplicing. Translation of procaryotic and eucaryotic mRNA. Posttranslational processing. Regulation of gene expression in procaryotes and eucaryotes. Signal pathways in mammal cells and their relation to the activation of transcription factors. Molecular basis of acquired immunity. Molecular basis of cancerogenesis (oncogenes, antioncogenes). Mechanisms of replication of viral DNA and RNA, transcription of viral DNA and translation of viral RNA. Molecular mechanisms of mutagenesis and recombination. Transposons. Repair mechanisms of damaged DNA. Elements of molecular evolution. Origin of life from the aspects of molecular biology. Essentials of molecular evolution. Origin of life from the aspects of molecular biology. On the whole, the general molecular processes occuring in living systems are emphasized in this lecture with respect to the specificities characteristic of the main groups of living systems (bacteria, archea, plants, animals and viruses).
