Course objectives

The defining properties of the group, the multiplication table, and the class. Symmetry elements and operations. The point symmetry groups, classification of molecules. Representations of a group, characters. Selection rules in spectroscopy and applications to the chemical bonding. Tracing the sources of symmetry arguments in chemistry the course aims to the ability of applying them.

Syllabus

• 1. Symetrie a přírodní vědy, historický přehled.
  2. Grupa, vlastnosti grupy, multiplikační tabulka, podgrupa, třída.
  3. Prvky a operace symetrie.
  4. Bodové grupy symetrie, klasifikace molekul podle symetrie.
  5. Maticové reprezentace operací symetrie, charaktery.
  6. Neredukovatelné reprezentace, jejich charaktery, degenerace.
  7. Tabulky charakterů neredukovatelných reprezentací.
  8 . Transformační vlastnosti funkcí x, y, z, xy, xz, yz, x², y², z² a rotací.
  9. Nulové a nenulové hodnoty integrálů.
  10. Výběrová pravidla pro spektrální přechody.
  11. Symetrie molekulových vibrací.
  12. Symetrie a chemická vazba.

Assessment methods (v češtině)

Přednáška doplněná podle potřeby procvičováním probírané látky.

Zkouška / kolokvium probíhá formou písemného testu. Při zpracování testu studenti mohou použít učebnice, poznámky a další vlastní pomůcky. Požadavky na úspěšnost testu se liší podle zakončení. Studenti, kterým písemná forma ukončení nevyhovuje, se mohou dohodnout na ústní formě.
