Course objectives
Expected goal of this course is to bring GIS technology to students of Botany and Zoology. Course is intended for beginners (no GIS knowledge needed). Biologists and Ecologists should be able to apply the facility of GIS technology in their research. They should have an idea of what GIS technology can bring them, they should make reasoned decisions about what is possible and what is not possible in GIS. They should be able to specify their questions to professional GIS operator, to cooperate with them and to understand how to interpret the results of GIS analysis. In Labs students will work with ArcGIS (GIS software produces by ESRI). They should be able to work in diferent coordinate systems, to view and query spatial and attribute data elements in ArcGIS , to perform simple alalysis, to write and run a simple script. Students will be familiarized with ArcGIS Server technology (to publish maps on internet) and with free GIS software QuantumGIS

Teaching methods
Teaching runs weekly in a computer clasroom, 1 hour of theoretical lecture is followed-up by 2 hours of exercises.
Assessment methods
Class exercises are finished by semester project, it's executed individually. Lectures are finished by final written multiple choice test, 22 out of 30 questions required.
