Course objectives
At the end of this course the students should be able to: perform basic physiological examinations; measure pulse wave velocity by sphygmography; calculate basic metabolic rate; evaluate recruitment and summation time in skeletal muscle; determine energy output in change of body position; calculate energy expenditure; evaluate nutritional status; create a daily diet; determine the sensitivity of respiratory center to hypoxia and to hypercapnia.
Syllabus
  • Sphygmography.
  • Recruitment and summation in skeletal muscle
  • Energy output in change of body position.
  • Measurement of basic metabolic rate.
  • Calculation of energy expenditure.
  • Compiling daily diet.
  • Evaluation of nutritional state.
  • Evaluation of sensitivity of respiratory center to hypoxia and to hypercapnia.
Literature
Teaching methods
Practical training in form of group and individual work. In the course empirical experiments are performed to explain the principles from the theoretical course Human physiology II.
Assessment methods
Practical training. Credit will be awarded for 12 protocols signed by the supervisor and which sum the results of each practical session. Students unable to participate for medical reasons are allowed to attend a substitute session. Practical knowledge forms an important part of the oral exam!
