Course objectives
The students will obtain knowledge about topic and subjects which are not taught in regular courses at Masaryk University. The course is offered by external lecturers who talk about their research. There are different lecturers in every semester. Rather than a comprehensive coverage of some subject, the purpose of this course is defining scientific problems in a focused topic, discussion on methods applied to solve these problems, and presentation of results of particular projects. The objective is to demostrate some topics which are not included in regular courses offered at Masaryk University.
Syllabus
  • The main topic for the spring semester 2015 is Seed Science and Nature Conservation by Dr. Borja Jiménez-Alfaro from the Department of Botany and Zoology, Masaryk University.
The aim of this course is to provide a basic but comprehensive background on applied seed science for biodiversity and conservation. The course in structured in different aspects of seed biology and ecology, covering disciplines of plant population biology, plant community ecology and conservation biology. Students will learn how to approach plant biology from a seed perspective and how to understand the main mechanisms behind seed dispersal, germination and plant establishment A special part of the course is dedicated to the use of native seeds for conservation, showing modern techniques for seed banking and the integration of seed research into habitat restoration practices. The course will be in English and can be attended by students of any degree in biological disciplines.
  • Main covered topics
