Course objectives
At the end of the course, students should be able to: - transfer the theory on behavior of chemical compounds in the environment and phase-transfer processes learned in the courses of Environmental chemistry to the practical level. - apply the analytical skills gained in the laboratory course of the Environmental analytical chemistry to more advanced experiments. - explore a potential of the laboratory experiments for quantification of the partitioning, photodegradation, biodegradation and bioaccumulation processes. - determine and compare the basic physicochemical characteristics (partitioning coefficients, degradation rates) of the individual pollutants. - interpret the laboratory results from the point of view of the environmental fate: - predict the environmental behavior of the chemicals based on their partitioning coefficients and degradation rates determined in the laboratory.
Syllabus
  • 1. Determination of the n-octanol-water partitioning coefficient (KOW) using a shaking flask method and a gas chromatography 2. Determination of the n-octanol-air partitioning coefficient (KOA) using a head space analysis and a gas chromatography 3. Assessment of the soil sorption coefficient as a quantitative descriptor of the extent to which an organic chemical is distributed at equilibrium between soil and the aqueous phase being in contact with it 4. Assessment of the soil-air partitioning coefficient of the chemical substance as a descriptor of the exchange processes between the soil surface and atmosphere 5. Determination of the photodegradation rates of the chemical compounds in the water phase 6. Assessment of the microbial degradation of chlorinated hydrocarbons 7. Bioaccumulation of organic compounds in selected bacteria
