Course objectives
At the end of this course the student will be able to:
understand and explain the basic concepts of vacuum physics;
determine the type of gas flow in the vacuum system;
distinguish basic types of vacuum pumps and gauges;
design and calculate the parameters of a simple vacuum system.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction: vacuum definition, importance of high vacuum for science, technology and industry, field of its application
  • 2. Free gases: free gases in the static state, free gases in the dynamic state, gas flow, vacuum conductance, gas flow through orifices
  • 3. Transport pumps: mechanical pump (piston, rotary, Root's), pumps working with the momentum transfer (molecular and diffusion pumps)
  • 4. Measurement of total pressures: mechanical, compression, thermal, viscosity (molecular) and ionization gauges
