Course objectives
Aim of the course is introduction of most important palaeolithic localities of the territory of Moravia to the students by form of 5 one day excursions.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course will be students very good oriented in most important palaeolithic localities at our territory and will be able to interpret their siginificance for anthropology and will be able to interpert anthropological findings and the evidence of presence of humans at this sites.
Syllabus
  • Primary summary of human evolution in Czech Republic and rest of the world
  • 1. Excursion to exposition of Human evolution in Pavilion Anthropos of Moravian Museum in Brno. Length of the excursion: approx. 2 hours.
  • Introduction of life environment of our ancestors from Homo erectus, Homo sapiens neanderthalensis to Palaeolithic Homo sapiens sapiens in Czech Republic
  • 2. Excursion to site Stránská skála in Brno city. Archaeological locality where were found remains of settlement of Homo erectus. Length of the excursion: approx. 2 hours.
  • 3. Excursion to site Pekárna cave in Moravian Karst. The cave is a typical archaeological site in the Moravian Karst. On its territory were found localities settled by Homo sapiens neanderthalensis and young Palaeolithic Homo sapiens sapiens. It is found place of considerable pieces of young Palaeolithic mobile art. Length of the excursion: approx. 3-4 hours.
  • 4. Excursion to young Palaeolithic localities Dolní Věstonice and Pavlov - the most considerable young Palaeolithic archaeological sites of South Moravia and Czech Republic in general. Found place of settlement of young Palaeolithic mammoth hunters including founds of human skeletal remains. A part of the excursion is visit of original localities, excursion to the Věstonice quarry with stratigraphic Pleistocene profile and visit to Pavlov museum. Length of the excursion: all day.
  • 5. Excursion to Předmostí u Přerova (Predmost near Prerov) - one of the most considerable settlement of Palaeolithic mammoth hunters in Czech Repubic where was found the largest mass grave with skeletal remains of young Palaeolithic man in Czech Republic (27 persons). A part of the excursion is visit of the Předmostí museum, a tour to the original site of the mass grave (a considerable example of damaging of archaeological site by the public building-up) and visitation of Palaeolithic exposition in Přerov museum. Length of the excursion: all day.
  • 6. Excursion to Mladeč caves - Palaeolithic locality where were found the oldest skeletal remains of young Palaeolithic people in central Europe. In the caves is an exhibition of Palaeolithic settlement of the Mladeč caves and of history of its excavation. Length of the excursion: all day.

Visitations of archaeological localities and museums.
Assessment methods
The credit is given for presence at all excursions. The teaching is proceeded by the form of intensive course.

Teacher's information
Because the course is proceeded as an intensive course(6 excursions), the terms of excursions are communicating at lectures of Human evolution personally between the teacher and students or by e-mail communication of the teacher to students.

21. 2. 2020, 9.00 - Excursion to exposition of Human evolution in Pavilion Anthropos. Meeting point of the participants is in the lobby of Museum Anthropos.

20. 3. 2020, 9.00 - Excursion to site Stránská skála in Brno city. Meeting point of the participants is at Stránská skála at the begin of track to the top.

3. 4. 2020, 8.00 - Excursion to site Pekárna cave in Moravian Karst. Meeting point of the participants is at parking place behind the Faculty of Sports MU in Kampus Bohunice. We will travel collectively by a car. Who wants to travel to Pekárna cave individualy it is possible to meet with the rest of the participants in front of Municipal office of Ochoz at 9.00 o'clock.

17. 4. 2020, 8.00 - Excursion to young Palaeolithic localities Dolní Věstonice and Pavlov. Meeting point of the participants is at parking place behind the Faculty of Sports MU in Kampus Bohunice. We will travel collectively by a car. Who wants to travel to Dolní Věstonice and Pavlov individualy it is possible to meet with the rest of the participants in front of the museum in Pavlov at 9.00 o'clock.

24. 4. 2020, 8.00 - Excursion to Předmostí u~Přerova (Predmost near Prerov). Meeting point of the participants is at parking place behind the Faculty of Sports MU in Kampus Bohunice. We will travel collectively by a car. Who wants to travel to Predmost individualy it is possible to meet with the rest of the participants in front of the Cultural and Information Centre in Predmost at 10.00 o'clock.

15. 5. 2020, 8.00 - Excursion to Mladeč caves. Meeting point of the participants is at parking place behind the Faculty of Sports MU in Kampus Bohunice. We will travel collectively by a car. Who wants to travel to Mladeč individualy it is possible to meet with the rest of the participants at the parking place for visitors of the caves in Mladeč at 10.00 o'clock.
