This is a professionally-oriented Bachelor's and following Master's interfaculty study programme that is taught at the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Medicine MU. It is a professional branch that is drafted to meet a growing demand of all the range of workplaces (especially genetic, microbiology and biochemical laboratories of health care institutions) for specialists proficient in modern methods of medical genetics and molecular biology with a good theoretical knowledge and developed practical skills. Therefore, the purpose of this study programme is to provide both excellent theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the branch of medical genetics and molecular biology.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • show deep knowledge in the fields of clinical genetics, oncology and molecular diagnostics and demonstrate skills necessary for work with laboratory equipment
  • master highly specialized molecular methods and diagnostics procedures based on DNA and RNA analyses in clinical laboratories for results analyses of laboratory examinations
  • perform laboratory diagnostics of inherited diseases on the level of chromosomal abnormalities and mutational changes
  • perform cytogenetical and molecular biology examinations of hematological malignities and solid tumors
  • use practical skills and deep knowledge of methods of cellular and molecular biology and genetics
(?)

Graduates of this programme can perform basic analyses in laboratories concentrated on genetics, cytogenetics and DNA diagnostics. At these laboratories, graduates can use their theoretical and practical skills in genetic counselling of patients and their close relatives or molecular biology diagnostics of organisms, pathological stages of cells and genomes.

The standard duration of studies is four semesters. To be admitted to the final state examination, students must obtain a total of 120 ECTS credits for required, selective and elective courses. Required courses constitute the basis of the discipline and make up 94 credits (including credits for courses focused on writing a Master’s thesis). Students choose elective courses according to their interests and intended professional specialization. For all students, there is an obligation to complete at least one course taught in English from the ones on offer at the department for the given level of studies.

During the course of their studies, students should follow the Study Catalogue for their year of matriculation. They can access the Study Catalogues through the faculty website.

Practical training under supervision is an obligatory part of the curriculum for this programme and takes place in the cytogenetic/molecular genetic laboratory.

The aim of this training is practical work in laboratories where specialized cytogenetic or molecular genetic examinations are performed.

Practical training takes place in clinical-research laboratories studying human/bacterial genome or cytogenetic/molecular genetic diagnostics. Students complete their training after consultation with their supervisor.

The final state examination consists of a Master's thesis defence and of an oral examination. The Master's thesis has an experimental character. The themes are chosen from the current offer or according to own interest after a consultation with the supervisor. The selection takes place at the beginning of the first semester.

Instructions on the final examination can be found on the website of OGMB.
