Course objectives
At the end of this course students should be able to describe and explain basic terms related to body systems, their organs, functions and disorders; use vocabulary and grammatical structures typical for nurses; apply medical language in communication with patients and colleagues.
Syllabus
  • Unit 1: Introduction, e-learning, requirements, assessment, revision. Unit 2: Medical emergencies I. Doctor-nurse communication. Past tenses vs. present tenses. Unit 3: Medical emergencies II. Nurse-patient communication I. Giving advice. Unit 4: Common medical procedures. Future vs. present tenses. Unit 5: Patient care. Nurse-patient communication strategies II. Grammar revision. The seminar focuses on practicing vocabulary and grammar structures necessary for nursing profession (i.e. nurse-patient communication, nurse-doctor communication, etc.)

Teaching methods
The course takes the form of seminars (discussions, pair work, group work), home preparation and e-learning. The above mentioned topics will be consolidated using all the study skills (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Supplementary materials used in the seminars will be provided by the lecturer.
Assessment methods
Prerequisites for the exam: timely submission of homework, attendance (you can only miss one lesson) and a minimal score of 70 per cent in the mid-term test. Assessment is based on the results of the final examination which tests the knowledge from both the autumn and spring semester. The prerequisite for the oral part is to reach a minimal score of 65 per cent in the written part of the examination.

Information on completion of the course: Studenti se státní jazykovou zkouškou, příp. jejím ekvivalentem (TOEFL, FCE apod.) mohou vykonat zkoušku kdykoliv během semestru.
