Course objectives
The aim of this course is to provide students with basic knowledge of cytology, general histology and microscopic anatomy, students will obtain necessary survey of the structure of constituent organs. This knowledge is essential to orientation within processed biological material during histologic slides preparation.
Syllabus
  • 1. Tissues: definition and classification. Epithelial tissue - covering epithelia, glandular epithelium.
  • 2. Connective tissue - general principles of organization. Connective tissue proper, cartilage and bone.
  • 3. Muscular tissue - classification, structure, occurrence and function.
  • 4. Nervous tissue - structure of neuron, synapsis. Neuroglia.
  • 5. Blood vessels - an overview of the structure. Lymphatic organs.
  • 6. Digestive system - oral cavity, an overview of structure of digestive tube, liver and pancreas.
  • 7. Respiratory system - respiratory passages, lung.
  • 8. Urinary system - kidney, urinary passages.
  • 9. Male reproductive system - testis, excretory passages, prostate gland.
  • 10. Female reproductive system - ovary, ovarian tube, uterus. Vagina, vaginal cytology.
  • 11. Structure and function of endocrine glands - an overview.
  • 12. Microscopic structure of the skin - an overview.
  • 13. Strucure and function of central and peripheral nervous system - an overview.
  • 14. An overview of microscopic structure of sensory organs - the eye, the ear.

Assessment methods
The course is concluded by oral examination. Students will demonstrate practical skills of tissues and aswer 1 question of general histology and 1 question of microscopic anatomy.
