Course objectives
The course Intensive Care, Nursing Care in Pediatrics, integrates knowledge from basic scientific disciplines, natural, social and behavioral sciences and builds on knowledge from anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and nursing care. It is conceived as theoretical-practical, with the acquisition of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, through the training of selected nursing activities used in pediatrics and intensive care. The course teaches students to divide children's age, focuses on physiological and pathological newborns, the most common injuries in children, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, intensive care unit, acute conditions in pediatrics, monitoring of the child in intensive care, infectious diseases in children and the specifics of radiodiagnostic examination. in a pediatric patient. The course introduces students to medical-preventive and nursing care in pediatrics and intensive pediatric care.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to: divide childhood and understand the peculiarities of childhood;
define the physiological and pathological newborn;
describe intensive nursing care for a pathological newborn;
measure and evaluate vital signs;
describe injuries and know accident prevention measures in children;
know CPR algorithms in children;
list the types of treatment units in intensive pediatric care;
describe acute conditions in children;
list the types of non-invasive and invasive monitoring in intensive care;
know approaches to the vascular bed in children;
be familiar with medical and nursing documentation in intensive care;
describe infectious diseases in children;
prepare the child for a diagnostic examination in radiology.

  • Distribution of childhood and specifics of individual developmental periods.
  • Newborn classification.
  • Nursing care for pathological newborns.
  • Measurement and evaluation of vital functions.
  • Pediatric injuries, injury prevention.
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation in children.
  • Intensive care in pediatrics - types of treatment units and their instrumentation and material equipment.
  • Acute conditions in children.
  • Non-invasive and invasive monitoring in intensive care.
  • Approaches to the vascular bed in children, infusion therapy.
  • Medical and nursing documentation in intensive care.
  • Infectious diseases in children.
  • Preparing the child for radiology examinations.
  • Training of selected nursing activities (manipulation with the child, measurement of vital functions, provision of a peripheral venous cannula, introduction of catheters and probes, pharmacological peculiarities).
  • Excursion to Brno University Hospital (neonatology intensive care unit, anaesthesiology and resuscitation department).
