Course objectives
During this course the students:
will get aquainted with the principles of some devices used in medicine;
will be informed how to recognize possible risks connected with the use of some medical devices (of mechanical, electromagnetic or optical character);
will get acquainted with physical principles of some physiological processes (cardiovascular system, respiration, origin of membrane potentials);
will get acquainted with the main concepts of the biophysics of sensory organs;
acquire basic knowledge of concepts of molecular biophysics.
Learning outcomes
After finishing this course the students:
will understand the principles of some devices used in medicine;
will recognize possible risks connected with the use of these devices (of mechanical, electromagnetic or optical character);
will know the physical principles of some physiological processes (cardiovascular system, respiration, origin of membrane potentials);
will have basic knowledge about concepts of molecular biophysics.

  • 1. Introduction. Biophysical view on structure of matter.
  • 2. Introduction into molecular biophysics I (subject of study).
  • 3. Introduction into molecular biophysics II (methods of study).
  • 4. Biophysics of biomembranes. Bioelectric phenomena.
  • 5. Biophysics of cardiovascular system.
  • 6. Biophysics of respiratory system.
  • 7. Biophysical function of sensory receptors. Biophysics of hearing.
  • 8. Biophysics of vision.
  • 9. Effects of mechanical forces on the living organisms. Tonometry.
  • 10. Medicine and technology. Biosignals and their processing.
  • 11. Optical laboratory instruments.
  • 12. Optical diagnostic instruments.
  • 13. Electrodiagnostic methods.
  • 14. Modern physical methods in surgery. Lithotripsy. Artificial body organs.
