Course objectives

At the end of the course student should be able to understand mechanisms of xenobiotic (including drugs) effects and under which conditions they and their combinations may elicit therapeutic, adverse, and toxic effects, and what is the relation to the dose given, administration route, status of the organism (differences in pediatrics and geriatrics). They will be familiar with the requirements of "Good Clinical Practice" for development of new drugs, and duties of physicians in cooperation with the pharmaceutical industry and principles of pharmacovigilance. They will be able to recognize selected drug classes and pharmacological profiles of representative drugs from groups of drugs selected in the curriculum.

• AUTUMN SEMESTER 2016/2017)
• Lectures: 1^st – 10^th week - Monday 8.00 – 10.30 h (3hrs); UKB A11, room 327

• 1^st lecture (19.9.): Introduction to pharmacology, Drugs classification. How drugs act. Introduction to pharmacokinetics.
• 2^nd lecture (26.9.): Factors influencing drug effect. Unwanted effects of drugs. Drug interactions. General rules of toxicity treatment. Information about drugs (SÚKL, Czech pharmacopoeia, AISLP, EMA).
• 3^rd lecture (3.10.): Basics of experimental pharmacology and drug development. Clinical evaluation. Registration, pharmacovigilance and drug advertisement. Drug prescription.
• 4^th lecture (10.10.): Hypnosedatives, antidepressants, general anesthetics.
• 5^th lecture (17.10.): Drugs of GIT - antacids, antiemetics, antidiarrhoics, spasmolytics, prokinetics.
• 6^th lecture (24.10.): Diuretics. Hypertension, angina pectoris and heart failure pharmacotherapy.
• 7^th lecture (31.10.): Blood coagulation pharmacology. Blood and plasma substitutes.
• 8^th lecture (7.11.): Diabetes mellitus pharmacotherapy. Glucocorticoids.Hyperlipoproteinemia.
• 9^th lecture (14.11): Antibiotics, antivirotics, antimycotics.
• 10^th lecture (21.11.): Pharmatotherapy of the cancer disease.

Teaching methods

Curriculum offers attendance at lectures read by teacher of pharmacology.

Assessment methods

During the studying the students have to prove active knowledge of pharmacology acquired. Students have to pass the exam: final written multiple-choice test. In the Final Exam students are asked to answer to multiple-choice questions. Only 1 correct answer is possible to each question. The test contains 30 questions generated randomly for each single student. One point is granted for each correctly answered question. The summary of the score obtained is evaluated as follows: mark A = 92-100% out of the maximum score; B = 84-91%; C = 76-83%; D = 68-75%; E = 60-67%; F = failed with the score below 60% of the maximum score.
