Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to familiarise the students with the issue of palliative care for terminally ill patients with an emphasis on respecting their wishes and needs.
Learning outcomes
After the completion of the subject students will : will know about the organization of palliative care (forms, types) and its integration into the healthcare system in the Czech Republic. • understand the multidisciplinary palliative care team • know the most common symptoms occurring in palliative care its monitoring and nursing interventions to eliminate or alleviate them • be able to understand cultural and spiritual aspects in palliative care • know the ethical aspects of palliative care • understand needs of the family and relatives and another beloved person of terminally ill patients• have an overview of care options for survivors - know the basic in bereavement.
Syllabus
  • Development of palliative care in the Czech Republic and abroad The forms and types of palliative care provision. Principles of palliative care, indication of palliative care. Multidisciplinary team, the role of individual members, team communication. The most common symptoms (pain, dyspnoea, anorexia, hemoptysis, constipation, insomnia ...) and their treatment. Cultural and spiritual aspects of palliative care. Accompanying and their needs. Ethical aspects (treatment decisions and procedures, "Previously expressed wishes"). Care for the survivors. Self-care and supervision of lay and professional carers.
