Course objectives
The primary learning objectives are:
- to acquire theoretical knowledge about the organization and meaning of psychiatry in nursing work
- to acquire theoretical knowledge about major psychiatric disorders
- to acquire theoretical knowledge about possible pharmacological and non-pharmacological procedures for the treatment of mental disorders.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- understand the importance and organization of psychiatry in the nursing process
- describe and recognize the symptoms of the most common psychiatric disorders
- design and implement a suitable nursing procedure for a mentally ill patient, including the care for a restless patient
- describe possible pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods for the treatment of psychiatric disorders.

  • 1. Introduction to psychiatry. History of psychiatry.
  • 2. Classification of psychiatric disorders. Psychiatric examination.
  • 3. General psychiatry: The most prevalent psychiatric symptoms.
  • 4. Mood disorders.
  • 5. Schizophrenia and related disorders.
  • 6. Neurotic and stress-related disorders.
  • 7. Eating disorders.
  • 8. Personality disorders.
  • 9. Organic mental disorders.
  • 10. Substance-related disorders.
  • 11. Child and adolescent psychiatry.
  • 12. Treatment in psychiatry: biological treatment methods, psychotherapy.
  • 13. Community psychiatry, assertive outreach teams.
  • 14. Legal aspects of psychiatry.

Hybrid form of teaching - a combination of face-to-face and online teaching.

The first and last lectures take place face-to-face on Monday 11 March and 22 April 2024 from 7.30-10.00 a.m. in the auditorium of the Psychiatric Clinic of the FN Brno Bohunice, building G, 1st floor, no. 136 (on the left next to the main entrance ).

The 2nd - 6th weeks are taught online in the form of self-study according to the Interactive syllabus, published in IS MUNI.
