Course objectives
The main objectives are to understand : 1) the basics of ethiopathogenesis of common diseases, 2) principles of genetic determination of diseases and 3) the role of interindividual variability. The student will learn the basics of the following chapters: Pathophysiology of digestive system / Intermediary metabolism / Disorders of metabolism of main macronutrients (saccharides, lipids, proteins) and micronutrients / Disorders of nutrition (hypo-/malnutrition, malabsorption, catabolic states, metabolic syndrome and obesity) / Pathophysiology of heart and vessels & blood / Pathophysiology of respiratory system / Pathophysiology of renal system / Pathophysiology of nervous, musculosceletal and reproductive systems
Learning outcomes
Student will be able, after completing the course (with account of the width of the subject):
- to characterize the state of health and illness in terms of different concepts
- to distinguish the genetic determinants of disease, the influence of external factors on the occurrence of diseases, the difference between monogenic and multigenic/complex disease
- to orientate in terms: cell, cell cycle
- to characterize the term homeostasis
- to discuss external and internal factors of the disease
- to characterize basic concepts of tissue involvement and wound healing
- to explain the difference between local and systemic inflammation
- to explain the chronobiology function in medicine
- to discuss the etiopathogenesis of the most important disorders of ion equilibrium and regulation of volume and tonicity
- to define basic concepts of acid-base balance
- to evaluate the importance of abnormalities of the most important micronutrients, disorders in vitamin levels and trace elements
- to define the disorders in metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and amino acids
- to characterize energy balance disorders.

  • Pathophysiology of the digestive system I - oral cavity, esophagus, stomach, liver, bile ducts
  • Pathophysiology of the digestive system II - pancreas, small and large intestine, malabsorption syndrome
  • Pathophysiology of the digestive system II - small and large intestine, malabsorption syndrome
  • Pathophysiology of blood I - hematopoietic tissue - pathophysiology of red and white blood cells
  • Pathophysiology of the vascular system I - atherosclerosis - ischemic heart, brain and peripheral vascular disease - shock
  • Pathophysiology of the vascular system II - hypertension - chron. venous insufficiency
  • Pathophysiology of the heart - heart failure - heart defects - cardiomyopathy - heart rhythm disorders
  • Pathophysiology of blood II - pathophysiology of blood clotting
  • Pathophysiology of the nervous system I (intracranial hypertension, disorders of the sensitive and motor system, pain)
  • Pathophysiology of the respiratory system - Homeostasis disorders IV - Blood gases - hypoxia and the body's response to hypoxia at the organ, tissue and molecular level - diseases of the respiratory system
  • Selected pathologies of the respiratory system
  • Pathophysiology of the excretory system
  • Pathophysiology of the musculoskeletal system (bones and muscles)
  • Tumor as a systemic disease - paraneoplastic syndromes - tumor cachexia - acute conditions in oncology

Teaching methods

Assessment methods
The subject ends with an exam. In the case of collecting 10 points per semester, the student is exempted from the entrance test before the exam, while attending one lecture = 1 point. If 10 points are not met per semester, the student takes a written test consisting of 20 questions on issues discussed in the lectures. It is necessary to achieve 60% of correct answers in order to be admitted to the exam.
