Course objectives
On completion of the course students understand mechanisms of drug actions, their routes of administration and conditions under which drugs and their combinations may elicit therapeutic, adverse, and toxic effects including drug dependence. They will distinguish among drug classes selcted in the curriculum according to their main therapeutic indications with an attention paid to common drug-drug interactions.
Syllabus
  • 1.LECTURE: Introduction into the study of Pharmacology, basic terminology. Drug classification. Mechanisms of drug effects. Basic pharmacokinetics.
  • 2.LECTURE: Survey of drug dosage forms and application routes.
  • Factors responsible for variation in drug response.
  • 3.LECTURE: Adverse drug effects. Drug interactions. General management of poisoning.
  • 4.LECTURE: Research and development of drugs, clinical evaluations. Registration, pharmacovigilance and advertising on drugs.
  • 5.LECTURE: Specificities of pharmacotherapy in children and in the elderly - general principles, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic peculiarities.
  • 6.LECTURE: Pharmacology of allergy. Histamine and H1-antihistamine drugs. Antisthmatics.
  • 7.LECTURE: Pharmacotherapy of peptic ulcer disease. Antiemetics.

Teaching methods
The curriculum enables attendance at lectures read by teachers of pharmacology.
Assessment methods
There is no testing of knowledge in this part of study as students are expected to continue pharmacological course in the subsequent semester.
