Course objectives
The main aim of the subject is to provide students with sufficient basic knowledge and information about drugs used in the treatment of selected most important diseases that dietitian may encounter in the clinical practice.
The subaims are to:
- familiarize students with general principles of drug effects and drug processing in the organism,
- put emphasis on the aspects that can be reflected in the mutual interactions of food and drugs,
- introduce several drug groups building on the knowledge of general pharmacological principles,
- introduce pharmacognosy and rational use of medicinal herbs.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course student will be able to:
- characterize selected drug classes stated in the curriculum and pharmacological profiles of representative drugs from these groups,
- be aware of potential drug interactions with particular respect to drug-food interactions,
- distinguish basic categories of active constituents of medical herbs,
- consider rational use of selected medical herbs in medicine.

  • Seminar 1: Revision from previous semester. PK case reports.
  • Seminar 2: Pharmacology of GIT II: Laxatives, antidiarrheals, antispasmodics.
  • Seminar 3: Overview of anticancer drugs
  • Seminar 4: Pharmacotherapy of substance dependance (smoking, alcoholism)
  • Seminar 5: Lipid-lowering agents. Pharmacotherapy of obesity.
  • Seminar 6: Case report workshop: Interactions of nutrition and drugs
  • Seminar 7: Basics of phytopharmacology I: Natural substances

Teaching methods
Topics stated in the syllabus are introduced to the students in the form of a presentation. Various practical activities are planned for the students and will be obligatory to achieve credits. These practical activities will use available information technology and will focus on e.g., case reports from the real clinical practice. Degustation of herbal infusions is planned to enliven the end of the semester (if personal attendance is possible).
Assessment methods
Credit will be granted to students who comply with requirements on practicals and pass the credit test. The PC credit test has 20 questions; each has only 1 correct answer. To be successful, students need to obtain 60% of points, i.e. 12 points.
