Course objectives
The aim of the course is to develop spoken, oral/aural communicative competence in every-day and academic situations, practice reading and writing skills necessary in daily life and academic environment, consolidate and expand grammatical knowledge, introduce subject specific terminology, as well as to offer insight into European education, culture and current affairs.
Learning outcomes
The course objective is to help course participants to be able to participate in the follow-up Foundation Programme. It practices the use of all four language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) as described by the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR), and develops other soft, and academic skills necessary for academic environment in Europe. Moreover, it focuses on scientific subjects (Biology, Chemistry and Physics), their vocabulary and proper pronunciation of subject specific terminology.
Syllabus
  • The course is divided into two parts: General and Academic English (120 lessons) and English for Specific Purposes (60 lessons). General and Academic English exploit both course book and authentic materials (newspapers, magazines, books, websites, podcast etc.) which help students gain skills necessary for everyday communication as well as communication in the academic environment. English for Specific Purposes includes lessons focused on basic terminology and functions typical of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Teaching methods
Seminars, homework, and online work.
Assessment methods
The course achievement is evaluated continuously and the progress is monitored by weekly tests obligatory for all students. In order to pass, students shall not miss more than 10% of the course, and they must submit all homework in time. To pass the course successfully, students must comply with the above-mentioned conditions and gain at least 60% in the end-of-course evaluation, which consists of tests in General and Academic English as well as English for Specific Purposes (language skills necessary for the study of biology, chemistry and physics).
