Course objectives
In the practical part of the training, the student gain practical skills of such a magnitude that will enable him/her to be included in the clinical teams of clinical haematological laboratories including the occupation of senior positions.
This subject summarizes the information on the origin, development, structure and function of the hematopoietic cell and organ system as well as the system of blood clotting. Both are described both in health and in various innate and acquired diseases.
Upon completion of the course, the students will be informed in detail about the pathophysiological mechanisms, in the framework of clinical, but in particular about the laboratory findings of haematological diseases. They will be able to indicate, interpret and also introduce laboratory methods to diagnose and monitor the treatment of a wide range of diseases, both hematologically and in a condition where the involvement of any organ or system is reflected in a change in hematopoiesis and / or hemostasis. They will be able to interpret the results obtained during a laboratory haematological examination for the diagnosis or differential diagnosis. Special attention will be paid to the principles of laboratory diagnostics in hematology, instrumentation and laboratory diagnostics (reagents) during the course of study, including the principles of reliability detection and cost / benefit principles. Students will be introduced to the system of good laboratory practice, including internal and external quality control, follow-up processes, reproducibility and reliability testing and, last but not least, the principles of certification and accreditation at the hematological laboratory.

Syllabus
  • Preanalytical phase in clinical haematology (collection of biological material for routine and special haematological examinations, transport, receipt, identification, sample storage, sampling conditions, limitation of interpretation of pre-defined clinical situations)
  • Work with automatic haematological analyzers (operation, calibration, quality control measurement, maintenance, definition of requirements for instrument purchase, laboratory diagnostics and maintenance, cost / benefit calculation of individual procedures)
  • Special white cell morphology (making and evaluating blood coats of peripheral blood, bone marrow and other punction samples including differential diagnostics and principles)
  • Requirements for bone marrow examination (cytological morphology, recommendations for cell categorization, contribution and limitation of immunophenotyping diagnostics, contribution and limitation of histological examination, contribution and limitation of cytogenetics and molecular genetics).
  • Laboratory classification of hemoblasts (examination of peripheral blood, bone marrow, cytochemical examination, immunophenotyping and cytogenetics or molecular diagnostics),
  • Laboratory methods of anemia examination and their evaluation, including suggestions for methods of differential diagnosis
  • Methods for detection of plasma coagulation processes,
  • Methods to determine the setting of hemostasis inhibition systems,
  • Methods for detecting function and biochemistry of the platelets,
  • Methods to determine the state of the fibrinolysis system,
  • principles of good laboratory practice
  • interpretation of haematological results
Literature
  • Dopl.
Teaching methods
Students are first introduced to the principles of laboratory work by individual methods. Following are their practical implementation and interpretation of the findings. A practical protocol is developed for the practical activities carried out.
Assessment methods
Credits are given for active participation in practices
