Course objectives

Lessons should introduce main principals of interpersonal communication in geriatric nursing. Main objectives can be summarized as follows and at the end of this course student should be able to: - to define requierements on effective social interaction to seniors and their relatives; to dentify and explain main principals of communication, communication techniques, alternative communication skills and communication with family members;to understand specific requirements of the socila interaction in geriatrics care; to explain determiners of the social interaction to seniors; to identify risc factors of the maladaptation process by seniors (elderly people) in nursing; to create a plan for effective social interaction to seniors and their relatives; to practically demonstrate the using of effectiveness technigues of the social interaction to seniors; to explain terminology concerning ageistic attitudes to the elderly and stereotypical behaviour;to solve the problematic situation in social interaction to seniors in model situation and casuistry. Lessons explain the main principals of communication, communication techniques, alternative communication skills, communication with family members. Gives information about crisis situations in medical field. Teaching involves lectures and class exercisses. Students solve casuistics and find communication sollutions. At the end of the course students should be able use specific communication techniques with geronthology patients and their relatives.

Syllabus

• Content and curriculum: - Problematic of ageism, - stereotypes, myths and fable in relation to seniors population.. - The particularity of approaches to the seniors – physiological disabilities, psychosocial factors, cognitive changes etc. - The techniques of active listening. - The quality of life of seniors evaluation during the interview. - Spiritual needs of senior patients – psychosocial relation, the intergenerational problems. - The technigues of balancing in stressful situation – how to deal with the bad news, how to recognise the needs of the terminal ill patients etc. - Ethics in gerontology, thanatology, euthanasy. - The preventuion of burn out syndrome of caregivers taking care of elderly people.

Assessment methods

written form - essay; oral form - group discusion Colloquium - credit is given according the rules which will be specified in frontal tuition. Student must create seminar assey - casuistry - the using of the effectiveness communication technigues with elderly or their relatives and the assey is discussed in the group.
